New Beginnings

This week I launched an ABC Pool project around the theme New Beginnings.  Pool is a fantastic community where members from anywhere in the country (or world) can submit various forms of media including text, audio, video and photos.  Projects help focus ideas and promote collaboration between members.  Anyone can start a project but ABC producers that start projects have the ability to collate work around an idea, promote through radio national and produce a piece for broadcast.  To launch the project I made a short promo video.  I made it to give (hopefully) an approachable face to the project so people could feel like I was an approachable source for bouncing ideas and helping with content.

Melodie Nelson, ‘Orpheus She’s Gone (behind the scenes vid)

Melodie Nelson is Lia Tsamaglou and apart from having a silent ‘T’ in her last name and being a top friend she also plays 50′s-60′s psych-pop music under the alias ‘Melodie Nelson’. As a big fan I’d mentioned to her that if she ever needed something filmed I’d be keen to help out, and sure enough it just so happened she was filming a clip for her new single ‘Orpheus She’s Gone’. Lia was hoping to get up a very short ‘behind the scenes’ look at how and why the film clip was made – I was the man for the job. This is the final result of hanging out for a couple of hours on the set of ‘Orpheus she’s Gone’, directed by Danielle Zorbos and filmed at Serial Space in Chippendale August 6, 2011. It will also serve as online content for the Into the Music documentry I’m making about iconic Australian music video TV show, Rage.

ABC OPEN Application

THEME MUSIC: Quirk
MUSIC: Epitomes – demo
(Both bands from the South Coast)

This video was made to go with my application to be an ABC Open producer.  Apart from family holidays on the south coast, I had never properly engaged with the community. I thought it was essential when applying for this position to get a sense of the people, the projects that already exist and the projects I might be able to assist with in the future.
I grabbed some gear, jumped in the car and drove to Nowra, just one town in the South Coast/Tablelands region.

I allowed myself just one day to talk to as many people as I could and produce this audio slideshow on the run. Unfortunately I didn’t have time to edit the photos but I’m proud of the effort and glad to now have such an insight on the area and what the ABC Open project could involve.

Seaing Things – Stop Motion Video

As part of the combined 30 Days of Creativity project and ABC POOL project myself and fellow poolie, Anna Bolton got together to draw a sea creature or object every day for the month of June.  The end goal was to then take these images and turn it into a stop motion video finale (watch it above!).

This video will then be mixed together with some other #30days content and shown on the big screen at Federation Square in Melbourne throughout July.

Go Aussie Go!

My mate Glen Stubbings got in touch with me about a job he’s going for at cricket Australia, for part of his application he needs to create a 1 minute video about himself.  Early on last Sunday morning we went down to my local cricket nets and recorded a couple of takes.  Tonight after work I’ve had a chance to edit it.  I edited on imovie and recorded to DV tape on an SD camera I’ve had since 07.  Soon I’ll have better gear, I’ve been talking too long about getting an SLR, I just need to get out there and get it.

Fingers crossed Glen get’s the job!

Peter Combe – An Unlikely Rock Star

Didn’t have a chance last night to fix up the online content for the Peter Combe piece so went in this morning to do that.  By ‘online content’ I mean creating a page for the story so people can click in and view all the details about that story.  To do this I just need to fill out a form using a program called WALLACE with details such as an intro blurb, producer, links and photos or video.  Just when I’ve got the hang of Wallace, the ABC are overhauling it and shooting through a new program that will make Wallace look like a claymation character.  I’ll stay tuned for training.

My piece on children’s performer, Peter Combe went to air today, you can view the full piece over at Music Show’s page here, or listen to the extended audio version here:

Below is a shortened version of the story with video and photos.  I used a very dodgey camera and imovie for this so I realise it’s not the best quality; it was also only my second attempt at a video!  Not making an excuse just trying to say although video content is a big challenge with a whole range of new skills needed, I’m very determined to keep at it and make each one better than the last.

Broadcast on The Music Show on ABC Radio National on 21st May, 2011

Chips on a Stick

Were you at 2010’s Newtown festival? Did you get something to eat there?

At every festival the choice on the menu gets bigger and bigger and one of the newer delicacies is ‘chips on a stick’. But have you ever thought about the effort that goes into making festival food?… Pop up stalls appear and then disappear so quickly…

Producer Mike Williams put an apron on and jumped behind the counter to find out just what goes into running a festival food stall.

Broadcast on the ‘All the Best’ on FBi 94.5, November 20, 2010 – ‘running’
