2ser Subscriber Drive 2011

Today I filled in for Lia’s show, ‘Sewn to the Sky’ – it was a particularly important show to fill in on because 2ser is currently in the middle of their annual subscriber drive!

This is my third year as a volunteer at 2ser but I haven’t yet hosted a subscriber drive show (I started just after 2009′s and was sick though out last year) so it felt really good to finally be a part of it.  Subscribing to alternative media is such an important thing, the benefits 2ser give the community are so broad and far reaching.  There’s still time to subscribe, starting at $35 you can jump on board the band wagon, feel good about yourself and join the 2ser family, just ring 9514 9500 (there’s also some cool prizes going all the time and it makes you eligible to win the feature CD each week).

The Hummingbirds

2ser held their first ever ‘Live at the Loft’ gig, it was a live broadcast of a 30 min set from 90′s Sydney indie legends, The Hummingbirds.  I was asked to fill in for the show and introduce the band.  It was a great afternoon that ran smoothly (lucky!).  Have a listen to the second half of the show including the entire Hummingbirds set.

In the Dark #2 – St Stephens Church Newtown

So excited to announce the second Sydney In the Dark event at Stephens Church in Newtown!  This will be an extremely unique listening event where a piece will be heard in the location it was recorded.  This time local artist Michael chick donated his skills and designed the poster and FBi’s All the Best are officially on board as supporters.  I could tell you more but it’s all in the press release which I’ve copied below.  If you need any more details/ideas please get in touch with me!

ABC Radio National, 2SER 107.3 and FBi’s All the Best presents the second In the Dark listening event in a unique location in the heart of Newtown. After a very successful debut, In the Dark is back again.

In the Dark offers a unique way for people to gather, turn off the lights and simply listen to audio/radio features, documentaries or soundscapes for pleasure.

This time the event will be all ages and take place inside St Stephens Church in Newtown, a 137 year old building considered a masterpiece in gothic revival architecture.

This will be an extra special In the Dark because the feature piece is specifically about St Stephens Church, Camperdown Cemetery and Newtown itself. Jane Ulman and Steven Tilley are two of the most experienced radio makers in Australia. In the late 90’s they constructed “A Green Thought in a Green Shade”; an engaging feature around the stories, history and poetry of the inner-west suburb.

The night will also feature a selection of short audio stories from Sydney’s own dedicated feature show All the Best. All the Best, broadcast on community radio station FBi 94.5, is a weekly radio show made by emerging story tellers that looks at Sydney and its people.

What: In the Dark: A night of stories told through sound

When: Saturday 24th September, listening starts at 7.30pm

Where: St Stephen’s Church, 189 Church St, Newtown Tickets: $8

Contact:  Organiser; Mike Williams – 0421 882 285

Melodie Nelson

Sweeping 60’s walls, lush production and sweet harmonies are just a few ways to describe Sydney songstress LIA TSAMAGLOU… also known as MELODIE NELSON.

This weekend Melodie will be launching her debut, ‘meditations on the sun’ and 2ser’s Mike Williams caught up to dig deeper into Lia’s background and this great album.

Catch Melodie Nelson tomorrow night at her album launch at GoodGod Small Club.  Tickets are $15 supported by the Magnetic Heads and Swimwear.

Broadcast on Friday Overdrive, 2ser 107.3, 2nd September 2011

Sietta

Everyone loves to tell you Sietta are from the Darwin, partly because it’s great to hear something from the top end get such a great response in the metro music market.  We discuss this as well as sparse production, Caiti’s blues upbringing and why collaboration was key to the success of their debut, ‘The 7th Passenger’.  At the end of the interview I was lucky enough to be treated to a live, acoustic version of “What am I supposed to do”.

Sietta are on tour with The Herd in September.

Broadcast on Thursday Overdrive on 2ser, 11th Aug 2011

In the Dark – A Tribute to Tony Barrell

I first heard about In the Dark while I was at uni last year, it was a website my radio lecturer, Virginia Madsen had suggested we check out – it seemed like an awesome idea.  I’d been wanting to organise it here in Sydney ever since and about a year later I finally raised the idea to some people at RN, they were really keen to help and it actually seemed like it could happen.  I got in touch with Nina Garthwaite who started In the Dark and asked if I could start it here – she was also very enthusiastic to make it happen.

A lot of organising later, with the help of Radio National as well as 2ser the first event finally took place on June 17.

Around 70 people fit into GoodGod Small Club on Liverpool St to hear pieces by Tony Barrell selected by producer and sound engineer, Russell Stapleton.  It was so great (and also a relief) to have so many people come to experience some of Tony’s work – great to be listening as a cohort and great to be hearing conversations about radio features in the break and after.  I’m really glad with how it went and hope to help put on many more in the future and feature a wide variety of audio makers and lovers.

Tumbleweed

They were swept up in the early ‘90’s grunge-rock era at a very young age.  They toured Australia and overseas and played with bands such as Mudhoney and Nirvana before fading away like checkered colours on a torn flanno…

But now Tumbleweed are back, free from the evil constraints of a record deal and ready to embrace who they are and what they love doing!

I caught up with Lenny just before their first show in years at the Metro Theatre.

Broadcast on The Band Next Door, 2ser, 107.3 – March 2011

Pikelet

The Australian Music Prize (AMP) is all the talk this week with nominee, Pikelet (Evelyn Morris) stopping by to have a chat while she’s in the state to play the gig and attend the announcing ceremony.  As well as that, new music from; the Middle East, Parades, Architecture in Helsinki and Mike Noga.

Sophie Hutchings

Last year Sophie Hutchings (yes sister to Jamie Hutchings of Bluebottle Kiss) released her debut, totally instrumental, ‘Becalmed‘ to a high dose of critical acclaim.  In fact, it was named in Mojo Magazine’s top 50 list of best albums for 2010 (underground category).  Sophie worked and mixed with Tony Dupe (Holly Throsby) and Tim Whitten with Sophie Glasson (Sarah Blasko) on cello and her two brothers, Jamie and Scott looking after percussion.  I feel washed away when I hear this work which isn’t surprising considering the sea was it’s major theme.  ’Becalmed‘ is both elegant and epic which brought me to my first question… what sort of person writes something like this?

Broadcast on The Band Next Door, 2ser – Feb 2011

Purdy

Purdy, has had a long and interesting life in the Australian music scene.  At the end of last year he released ‘Deviant Nature’ and this weekend will be playing his first show in years.

Broadcast on The Band Next Door, 2ser – Feburary

Eli Wolfe

He’s a real down to earth character, has long golden hair and a voice like Eddie Vedder.  In this interview with Eli Wolfe we talk about his philosophy on music and life on the road.  In 2010 he did an 8 month tour which totaled 80 shows around regional Australia,  I put it to him that he’s a bit of a hippie and his answer may surprise you.

Broadcast on The Band Next Door, 2ser 107.3 – Jan 2011

Tales in Space

Tales in Space have just launched their second EP – ‘Ghost in the Room’ and to celebrate they’ll be bringing their electro-pop sounds to the Annandale.

Luke and Simon (AKA Pieman) came in for a chat about their sound, production and future.  Luke is a producer and has done a lot of work on Art vs Science’s up-coming release so it was clear to see where TIS get their highly produced sound from.

Broadcast on The Band Next Door, 2ser, 107.3 – Dec 2010

Lost Generation

The world’s unemployment level is at an all time high, according to a report by the
International Labour Organisation.

Here in Australia, despite narrowly avoiding the worst of the global financial crisis, our youth unemployment level is at a 9 year high.  With areas such as west Adelaide, west Melbourne and the central coast of New South Wales reaching up to 40% youth unemployment.

Why is it that youth are the first to be hit in a financial crisis and the last to recover?

And what happens when a generation gets lost in the system? Mike Williams reports.

Broadcast on Razors Edge, 2ser, 107.3 – August 2010

What if…?

As a kid I’d watch ‘Crossing Over with John Edward’ and look for the script or the ear piece and analyse what he was saying, waiting for him to slip up so I could catch him out.

Psychics, mediums, fortune tellers… etc etc.. there’s a million of them, but what exactly do they do?, and… how do they do it?

Watching Mr Edward, it’s easy to say he’s got producers researching every audience member but deep down inside don’t you ask yourself… what if?

I do, and I wanted to find out…

Waltzing Jeffery

In the story of waltzing matilda, the swagman would rather commit suicide than face his consequences.

From the outset it seems the swagman won, but was the swagman really a hero?  Or was a he a coward? Out of control?

The story of Jeffery, a 19 year old who’s addicted to heroin, takes a look at the same issues the swagman faced all those years ago.

Broadcast on 2ser, 107.3 – October 2009
