Mike Williams is an audio documentary maker with over 15 years experience producing remarkable stories and building audiences across radio, online, and podcasting.
He specialises in first-person narrative, Australian cultural histories, and music documentary and is known for his irreverent style. The Australian said his “work harnesses a particular vibe of Australiana not heard elsewhere”, and The Guardian noted its, “fast, self-deprecating and brash humour”.
Mike worked as a staff member for Radio National’s features team, created one of the ABC’s first ‘podcast-first’ documentary series called The Real Thing (listed in Apple’s top 10 podcasts for 2016), helped set up RN Drive, helped set up Double J and bring The J Files music history program back to life, produced Guardian Australia’s first podcast, worked as triple j’s Special Projects producer (including organise the Hottest 100), was the Supervising Producer for Inside the Big Day Out podcast, and even documented trying to learn how to backflip.
His stories have been commissioned by BBC Radio 4, BBC World Service, and CBC. He trained and facilitated award-winning independent podcasts such as ‘Linda Marigliano’s Tough Love’ and Jen Cloher’s ‘Everybody’s Trying To Find Their Way Home’. Mike currently works as an Executive Producer at LiSTNR supporting some of Australia’s biggest podcasts to build new audiences.
Along the way he’s pushed boundaries in live documentary performance, achieved international recognition (Hearsay, Third Coast, Transom), and his investigation into the disappearance of office forks sparked a front page story in the Wall Street Journal.
Mike’s passionate about sharing the craft of audio storytelling and runs lectures and training workshops for universities, community groups, and across the pacific.
