From St Kilda to Kings Cross

By 1985 Paul Kelly had quit his band, left a record label, split up with his wife, and moved to Sydney.

He was starting again. And the first single on his new, self-funded, solo album (unironically titled ‘Post’) was about travelling on a bus, ‘From St Kilda to Kings Cross’. This song was the beginning of the Paul Kelly that would go on to commentate, celebrate, and corral an Australian psyche.

Almost 35 years later, ABC documentary maker Mike Williams tries to fully understand what this song means by catching the bus again.

First broadcast on ABC RN’s Earshot during #AusMusicMonth 2019.
