Making ‘Tender’ — a podcast about domestic abuse

Tender (season 2) is a podcast that chronicles the life of domestic violence awareness advocate, mother, and victim-survivor Roia Atmar.

Roia joins me to discuss the issue of domestic abuse and shares some of her experience in the ‘after’ — the process of how she reclaimed her identity.

“A lot of us forget [our identity] because you’ve been in a relationship for years and years and you’ve been told who to be, and you lose touch of who you are,” Roia said.

“It’s not something that comes to you within a day or month. Everyone’s journey is different and it depends on the amount of support that you get”.

Later in the episode, Broadwave producer Bethany Atkinson-Quinton jumps on a call to dig into the craft. Beth explains how the team (which includes co-producer, Madison Griffiths) went about making a podcast that deals with such a sensitive issue and also why it was critical that Roia present the show herself.

Season two of Tender is out now, have a listen.

Tender is produced by the Broadwave collective.
